FAQ

Maltese Questions and Answers

About our puppies, and about living with a Maltese.

Buying a Puppy

01

How do I reserve a Maltese puppy?

Choose a puppy from the available puppies, then send a message through the contact form or call (856) 394-0451. We talk it through with you first: your home, your routine and which puppy suits it. When we have agreed, you read and sign the puppy contract, which sets out every term in writing.

02

How old are the puppies when they go home?

Pet puppies go home at twelve weeks or older, and show puppies at six months or older. We do not release puppies earlier. Each puppy's age is on its card.

03

What comes with a Divine Maltese puppy?

A veterinary examination with a certificate of health, vaccinations and worming up to date for its age with the written record, AKC registration papers (Limited Registration for a pet), a week's supply of its food, and a written health guarantee. Both parents are tested for patellar luxation, heart defects, eye disease (CAER) and liver shunt.

04

Are there any other fees?

No. The price of the puppy is the only charge, paid before the puppy travels or when you collect. Travel, if you need it, is quoted separately for your route.

05

Are the photos of the actual puppy?

Yes. Every puppy photo on this site is of that puppy.

06

What if the puppy I want is reserved?

Reserved puppies stay on the available puppies page with a Reserved label. Tell us what you are hoping for (boy or girl, teacup-sized or not, and when) and we will tell you when a puppy like that is ready.

07

Where is Divine Maltese?

In the New Orleans area of Louisiana. Baton Rouge is about 1 hour 20 minutes away and Gulfport about 1 hour 15 minutes. You can collect your puppy in person, or a flight nanny or ground transport can bring it to you. Find your state.

08

Can I ask questions before I decide?

Please do. Ring (856) 394-0451 or use the contact form to ask about a puppy, the breed, the contract or travel to your area. Ask about any clause in the contract before you sign it.

Price

01

How much is a Maltese puppy?

Each puppy's price is on its card on the available puppies page, and the Maltese price page explains what is included and what a Maltese costs to keep.

02

Do teacup-sized puppies cost more?

No. A teacup-sized puppy costs the same as its littermates, and a boy costs the same as a girl. Size is not a reason to charge more.

03

How much does travel cost?

It depends on the route and on whether the puppy flies with a nanny or goes by ground. Tell us your town through the contact form and we will quote for it.

Getting Your Puppy Home

01

How does a puppy get to me?

Three ways: collect in person, a flight nanny who carries the puppy in the aircraft cabin and hands it to you at your airport, or ground transport over two to three days. A puppy is never shipped as cargo. The delivery page explains each one.

02

Is my puppy checked before it travels?

Yes. Our veterinarian examines every puppy before it leaves, and it travels with its certificate of health and vaccination record. If a puppy does not pass that examination, it does not travel, and anything you have paid is refunded or moved to another puppy, as you prefer.

03

What if the travel date has to move?

If a date moves for weather, a heat advisory or a road closure, you are told why and a new date is agreed. That is not a cancellation, and nothing is lost.

Health and the Guarantee

01

Are the parents health tested?

Yes. Both parents are tested for patellar luxation, examined for heart defects, examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist under the CAER scheme, and bile acid tested for liver shunt. The certificates are shown on request.

02

How does the health guarantee work?

Your own veterinarian examines the puppy within one week of collection; that visit activates the guarantee. If the vet finds a serious congenital or hereditary defect that materially affects the dog's quality of life, tell us within 48 hours with the written findings, and you choose a replacement puppy or a full refund. You do not have to return the dog.

03

What does the guarantee not cover?

Parasites, minor or self-resolving conditions, injury, and anything that arises after that first veterinary examination. It covers the purchase price, not vet bills, which is what pet insurance is for. The health guarantee page has the full terms.

04

What happens if I can no longer keep the dog?

Contact us first. We will take back any dog we bred, at any age and for any reason, with no time limit. Nothing bred here may be sold or given on, or surrendered to a shelter, without talking to us.

The Maltese

01

How big does a Maltese get?

The AKC standard asks for under seven pounds, with four to six pounds preferred. Individual dogs vary, which is why no honest breeder promises an adult weight. How big a Maltese gets.

02

What is a teacup Maltese?

"Teacup" is a word, not a breed or an AKC category. It usually means a very small Maltese. Our teacup-sized puppies are simply the smallest puppies of normal litters from tested parents. What teacup Maltese means.

03

Do Maltese shed?

Very little. The Maltese has a single silky coat with no undercoat, so there is less loose hair, but no dog is truly hypoallergenic and the coat needs daily brushing. Grooming a Maltese.

04

How long do Maltese live?

The AKC gives twelve to fifteen years, and some live longer with good care. Maltese lifespan.

05

Are Maltese good with children?

They are gentle and affectionate, but a four to seven pound dog is easily hurt, so they suit homes with older children or adults who handle them carefully. The Maltese temperament.
