How Your Puppy Gets Home
Collect in person, or let a flight nanny or ground transport bring your puppy to you. Never cargo.
Three Ways Home
Come to us in the New Orleans area, meet your puppy and take it home in your own lap.
A flight nanny carries your puppy in the aircraft cabin, under the seat, and hands it to you at your airport.
A puppy transporter drives your puppy to you over two to three days, with stops for food, water and rest.
A puppy is never shipped as unaccompanied cargo. Travel is quoted separately for your route: tell us your town.
Collecting in the New Orleans Area
Collecting in person is the simplest way, and the puppy rides home in your lap. We arrange a time, go through the feeding and grooming routine with you, and hand over the paperwork. Baton Rouge is about 1 hour 20 minutes away, Gulfport about 1 hour 15 minutes and Mobile about 2 hours 10 minutes; the Louisiana page has more drive times.
A Flight Nanny
For a long distance, a flight nanny is the kindest way to travel for a dog this small. The nanny flies with your puppy in the aircraft cabin, in a carrier under the seat, and hands it to you at your arrival airport. The puppy is never out of a person's care.
Ground Transport
A ground transporter drives your puppy to you over two to three days, with regular stops for food, water and rest. It suits families who are closer, or who would rather avoid an airport.
Before Your Puppy Travels
Our veterinarian examines every puppy before it leaves, and it travels with its certificate of health, its vaccination record and its AKC papers. If a puppy does not pass that examination, it does not travel, and anything you have paid is refunded or moved to another puppy, as you choose. If a date moves for weather, a heat advisory or a road closure, you are told why and a new date is agreed.
What to Have Ready
- A small crate or pen: A safe den for sleeping and the first step in house training.
- A soft bed and a blanket: A Maltese has no undercoat and likes to be warm.
- Small, shallow bowls: Easy for a tiny puppy to reach.
- The food it already eats: The week’s supply that comes home with your puppy, then change slowly if you want to.
- A pin brush, a comb and a slicker: For the daily brush that keeps a white coat from matting.
- Tear stain wipes or a soft cloth: To keep the face clean and dry.
- A light harness and leash: A harness protects a small neck and windpipe.
- Puppy pads or a litter area: Useful while a very small puppy learns to wait.
- Soft toys and safe chews: Puppies teethe until about six months.
- A carrier: For vet visits and for carrying a small dog where walking is not safe.
The First Week
Keep things quiet, feed small meals often, and let your puppy sleep. Very small puppies can drop their blood sugar if they miss meals, so keep to the feeding routine (see feeding a Maltese). Have your own veterinarian examine the puppy within one week: that visit activates the health guarantee. Caring for a Maltese puppy covers the rest.
Travel Questions
01How much does travel cost?
It depends on the route and on whether the puppy flies with a nanny or goes by ground. Tell us your town through the contact form and we will quote for it.
02How does a puppy get to me?
Three ways: collect in person, a flight nanny who carries the puppy in the aircraft cabin and hands it to you at your airport, or ground transport over two to three days. A puppy is never shipped as cargo. The delivery page explains each one.
03Is my puppy checked before it travels?
Yes. Our veterinarian examines every puppy before it leaves, and it travels with its certificate of health and vaccination record. If a puppy does not pass that examination, it does not travel, and anything you have paid is refunded or moved to another puppy, as you prefer.
04What if the travel date has to move?
If a date moves for weather, a heat advisory or a road closure, you are told why and a new date is agreed. That is not a cancellation, and nothing is lost.
05How does the health guarantee work?
Your own veterinarian examines the puppy within one week of collection; that visit activates the guarantee. If the vet finds a serious congenital or hereditary defect that materially affects the dog's quality of life, tell us within 48 hours with the written findings, and you choose a replacement puppy or a full refund. You do not have to return the dog.
