Maltese Puppies for Sale in Louisiana

From Divine Maltese in the New Orleans area, for families from Shreveport to the Gulf.

Louisiana life happens on porches, in kitchens and around long tables, and a Maltese suits all three. A dog under seven pounds rides happily on a lap at a crawfish boil, naps in a shaded swing and follows you from room to room. The catch is the air. It is warm, wet and heavy for much of the year, and a long white coat shows every bit of mud, rain and pollen.

Divine Maltese is in the New Orleans area of Louisiana, about 1 hour 20 minutes from Baton Rouge and 2 hours 10 minutes from Lafayette, so collecting a puppy in person is a day trip from Baton Rouge, Lafayette or the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

A Maltese in Your Part of Louisiana

New Orleans and the Northshore

In the older neighborhoods, think Uptown, the Garden District, Mid-City and the Marigny, you will find shotgun doubles, raised cottages and balconies, and a small dog suits all of them. Short evening walks under the oaks are easy, and a Maltese can be scooped up when sidewalks buckle. Across the lake in Covington and Mandeville, fenced yards and shaded streets are more common.

Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge mixes quiet subdivisions with apartments near LSU and the lakes. A Maltese does well in either, and a slow evening walk on the neighborhood sidewalks near the lakes becomes a pleasant routine. Tiger Stadium weekends bring crowds, noise and dropped food, so a nervous small dog is better left at home on game days with a chew and a quiet room.

Lafayette and Acadiana

Acadiana is a land of bayous, sugar cane fields and neighborhoods where everyone knows the dog on the corner. Households here often have yards and big gatherings, with toddlers and visiting cousins underfoot. A Maltese can enjoy the company, but a puppy needs a quiet spot of its own, away from the crowd and from heavy boots.

Shreveport-Bossier

Up in the northwest corner the weather is more varied, with winter mornings that surprise people used to the Gulf. Neighborhoods around Southern Hills and the Bossier City suburbs have lawns and sidewalks for easy walking. A light sweater helps on a cold January day, and after any outing near the pine woods, run your hands through the coat.

Louisiana Hazards for a Tiny White Dog

Hurricane season. From June through November, a small dog needs a plan before a storm is named. Keep a carrier that fits your Maltese comfortably, a few days of the food it eats, bottled water, any medication and a copy of vaccination records in one grab bag. Practice carrier time during calm weeks so evacuation is not the first time your puppy sees it.

Mud, rain and white fur. A single white coat soaks up whatever it touches. After a wet walk, expect brown legs and a damp belly, and a coat left wet can tangle quickly in the humidity. Keep a towel by the door, wipe feet and belly, and brush once the coat is dry. A short puppy cut makes the rainy months far easier.

Mosquitoes and heartworm. Standing water and warm nights mean mosquitoes nearly all year, and mosquitoes carry heartworm. Ask your veterinarian about a preventive plan that suits a dog this size, and follow it every month rather than only in summer. Fleas also stay active through our mild winters, so a comb through the coat is worth doing weekly.

Day to Day With a Maltese in Louisiana

Summer is the long season here, so a Maltese does best with air conditioning on, walks at dawn or after sunset, and fresh water always in reach. Pavement can scorch tiny paws, so rest your palm on it for a few seconds before you head out. A parked car is never safe, even for a quick errand. In winter the dips are brief, but a dog without an undercoat still feels a damp cold, so keep a sweater handy. Brush every day, because humidity turns a silky coat into knots, and many Louisiana owners choose a short summer trim. A bath every few weeks keeps the white bright. Exercise is gentle: two short walks and a game of chase in the hallway are plenty. A Maltese is unhappy alone for long stretches, so plan for company. Young children should sit on the floor to hold the puppy.

Questions From Louisiana Families

Can a Maltese handle a Louisiana summer?

Yes, with sensible habits. Keep the house cool, walk early or late, carry water, and skip the pavement at midday. Watch for heavy panting, drooling or sudden tiredness, which mean it is time to cool the dog down and call your veterinarian. A short trim helps, but never shave to the skin.

Is a Maltese a good fit for a Louisiana apartment or a house with a yard?

Either works. A Maltese needs little space and much company, so a condo with daily walks suits it as well as a house. A yard is a bonus, but a small dog should never be left out there alone because of heat, mosquitoes and hawks overhead.

How far is New Orleans from Baton Rouge and Lafayette?

About 1 hour 20 minutes from Baton Rouge and 2 hours 10 minutes from Lafayette by road without heavy traffic, and about 5 hours from Shreveport. The table above has more towns, including the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Mobile.
