Maltese Puppies for Sale in Colorado

From Denver to Boulder, and everywhere in between.

Altitude, sunshine and sudden weather define Colorado, and its people take their dogs everywhere. A Maltese is not a trail dog, but it is happy in a small carrier while you walk a flat path, sip coffee on a patio or run errands. The challenge here is cold, dry air and snow, which a thin white coat with no undercoat feels immediately.

From the New Orleans area of Louisiana, home of Divine Maltese, it is about 1,298 miles by road to Denver.

Raising a Maltese Around Colorado

Denver

Denver is a city of bungalows in Highland and Washington Park, new apartments in LoDo and the River North district, and suburbs spreading out to Aurora and Littleton. Dog-friendly patios are common, and the streets around Washington Park make long, flat loops for a short morning outing. Winter sidewalks may carry de-icer, so wipe the paws each time.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, with wide streets and many houses with fenced yards. Winds come off the mountains, and the weather can change from warm to snowy in a day. The flat sidewalks of Old Colorado City make a pleasant walk for a small dog in the milder months.

Fort Collins

Fort Collins is a bike-friendly college town with leafy neighborhoods around Old Town and many apartments near the university. Walks along the Poudre River Trail are flat and pleasant, and the city is relaxed about dogs. In winter the breeze across the plains is sharp, so a sweater and a short outing are better than a long stroll.

Boulder

Boulder is outdoorsy, with condos near Pearl Street, older homes in Mapleton Hill and trails climbing right out of town. Plenty of dogs hike here, but a Maltese does best on the flat paths along Boulder Creek. Mountain lions and coyotes live close to the edges of town, so keep your dog leashed and within reach.

What Catches Colorado Maltese Owners Out

Snow, ice and de-icers. Winter storms bring snow and the salts and chemicals spread to melt it. Snow can ball up in long leg hair and ice cuts at tender paws. Keep the feet and belly trimmed, wipe paws with warm water after walks so the dog does not lick residue, and put a sweater on for any trip outdoors in the cold.

Dry air and altitude. Dry Colorado air can make a silky coat static and brittle, and cracked skin may follow. A humidifier indoors, a conditioner after baths and daily brushing help. Strong sun at altitude also matters, so shade a young dog in summer and do not rush exercise, since a tiny dog tires quickly in thin air at higher elevations.

Coyotes, hawks and foxtails. Coyotes, hawks and other predators are part of the Front Range, even in town. Stay with your Maltese in any yard and avoid leaving it out at dawn or dusk. Dry grass seeds can catch in a long coat, so after walks near open space, check the legs, ears and between the toes.

Everyday Life With a Maltese in Colorado

The seasons are distinct, and a Colorado Maltese lives by them. Winter calls for a warm sweater, quick potty trips on cold mornings and indoor play when storms roll in. Spring is muddy and unpredictable, so a towel near the door earns its place. Summer days are sunny and dry, with cool evenings that make for nice walks, though midday sun at altitude is strong. Fall brings crisp air that suits a short stroll in a light sweater. Brush the coat every day, all the way down, and consider a short puppy cut for the muddy months. Condos and apartments work well, and short walks and play indoors are enough exercise. A Maltese left alone all day will struggle, so plan for company or a midday break. Children should sit down before they pick the puppy up.

Questions From Colorado Families

Can a Maltese handle Colorado winters?

With a little help, yes. Because there is no undercoat, a Maltese needs a sweater, short outings and a quick paw wipe afterward. Keep potty trips brief on the coldest days, and give your dog a warm bed away from drafts indoors.

Is a Maltese a good hiking dog in Colorado?

Not for long trails. A Maltese tires quickly, is small enough to be taken by a predator and feels both cold and heat. It does well on flat, short paths and in a carrier when you want to bring it along, but it is a companion first.

How far is New Orleans from Denver?

About 1,298 miles by road, roughly 19 hours without heavy traffic. From that far, choose a flight nanny, who carries the puppy in the aircraft cabin, or ground transport over two to three days. A puppy never travels as cargo.

The Maltese care library covers the breed in depth, and the Arizona page covers life with one there. The Maltese price page sets out what a puppy costs and what comes with it.
