Maltese Puppy Care and Tips

Everything linked above was written for one reader: the person who has just brought home a Maltese puppy from us and has a question at nine o'clock at night. Over thirty-four years the questions have turned out to be the same ones, so we wrote the answers down. They are here for anyone, whether your puppy came from this kennel or not.

How to use these pages

Start with caring for your Maltese puppy and the first weeks at home, which cover the things that go wrong in the first fortnight. Then feeding and the foods a Maltese must not eat. Housebreaking and the three pages on crates are the training section, and grooming, the coat and the two pages on staining are the part that keeps a white dog white. The puppy stages is the long one, and the one to read when you wonder whether what your puppy is doing is normal. It almost always is.

What these pages are not

They are a breeder's notes, not a veterinary manual. Nothing here replaces your own vet, and if a puppy is lethargic, will not eat, has diarrhoea that lasts more than a day, or simply seems wrong to you, the right page is the vet's phone number rather than any of ours. Where we mention a product or a method it is because it has worked in this house; other breeders do things differently and many of them are right too.

Keep in touch

If your puppy came from us, the phone number on every page of this site is the breeder's own, and it is for you for the life of the dog. We would rather hear about a small worry early than a large one late. We also keep the photographs owners send, and compare them against the parents and the litter, because every grown puppy tells us something about the next breeding.
