What a show puppy is

A show prospect is not a prettier pet. It is a puppy that, at the age it can be judged, has nothing in its bite, structure, pigment, coat or movement that the standard would penalise, and has the attitude to stand on a table and enjoy being looked at. Most puppies, even from champion parents, are not that, and the ones that are only show it with time. That is why our show puppies stay with us until six months, where pet puppies leave at twelve weeks. At six months the adult bite is in, the coat has declared itself silk or cotton, and the movement can be assessed honestly. We would rather hold a puppy back and grade it down to pet than send a "show puppy" that turns out not to be one.

Who they go to

Show prospects are sold on a written contract and are placed with people who will actually show them, whether that is an experienced exhibitor, a breeder we already work with, or a newcomer who is willing to learn the coat and put in the weekends. If you are new to the ring, say so; we started as novices with a dog who finished in spite of us, and we are not going to hold it against you. What we will ask is how you intend to show the dog, who will groom it, and what your plans for it are after it finishes.

The record behind them

Dogs bred here have won multiple all breed Bests in Show, Best of Breed at the American Maltese Association National Specialty, the National Sweepstakes, and the Pedigree Award for the top conformation Maltese in the United States in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005. CH Divine's Marc Of Friendship won Best of Breed at Crufts in 2006 and 2007 and the Toy Group there in 2007. CH Marcris Indecent Proposal sired fifty-three champions. Divine dogs have finished in South America, Europe and Asia as well as at home. Every one of those wins is listed with its year on the awards page, and every champion has a page of its own under champions.

A show puppy is still a Maltese first, and it lives in the house like the rest. The heads, the silk coats and the temperaments that win in the ring are the same ones that go home as pets; the only difference is that nothing on a show puppy is a fraction off. Evenings and weekends are the easiest time to reach us.
